Debate Team Ends Season on High Note

The Berea College Speech and Debate Team completed a highly successful 2013-14 season at the Pi Kappa Delta National Forensics Championship this past weekend. The team had already achieved a number of significant milestones, including a top 10 national ranking by the National Parliamentary Debate Association and tripling the number of awards won in the past 13 years.  To cap the season off, Berea attended its first national forensics championship, where it competed against 600 individual event competitors and 111 debate teams.  The talented Berea squad captured national rankings in four individual and five team events:

Jonah Cabiles – 2nd place novice debater in the nation

Nate Stewart – 3rd place novice debater in the nation

Mira Denton – 17th place varsity debater in the nation

Mira Denton & Dylan Hunziker – 3rd place varsity debate team in the nation

Jonah Cabiles & Holden Dillman – 5th place novice debate team in the nation

Maryam Ahmed & Megi Papiashvili – 5th place varsity debate team in the nation

Dylan Hunziker and Jonah Cabiles – Finalists in duo improvisation

Nate Stewart & Erica Scott – Quarterfinalists in duo improvisation

Dylan Hunziker – Quarterfinalist in impromptu speaking

Seniors Mira Denton, Dylan Hunziker, Jacob Hart, Erica Scott, Maryam Ahmed and Blayne Cohran were inducted into the Pi Kappa Delta National Honor Society.
