Ascension Health, the nation’s largest nonprofit healthcare organization, has been selected to receive Berea College’s Internship Employer of the Year award for 2012. Berea College’s Office of Internships selects recipients that offer valuable internship opportunities for students. The office selected Ascension Health for its efforts in creating a high-quality internship program that specifically targets Berea College students.
Formed in 1999, Ascension Health has grown to become the largest nonprofit and third largest overall healthcare system in the United States, providing $1.2 billion in care to the poor and underprivileged last year.
“We remain committed to growing this program in a meaningful way,” Ascension Health Senior Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer Scott Caldwell said in response to the award. “I will only be satisfied when we are permanently hiring several Berea students a year and communicating to the 20,000 vendors who sell us goods and services just how special Berea, its mission, and its student are.” Caldwell is also a member of the Berea College board of trustees.
The Office of Internships, under the direction of Esther Livingston since 2011, seeks to aid students in finding internship opportunities in which they can explore career options, obtain practical work experience, develop professional skills, and establish contacts that can help them further their careers after graduation.
